Reducing slip risks in hotels

Businesses are always trying to reduce risks in the workplace for staff and customers, and hotels are no exception. The cost to hotels in regards to slip accidents is extortionate, not taking into account the time and money spent on legal costs plus the damage to the business after such accidents. In a world of social media and travel advice sites, news can reach many in a split second even if comments about safety (or lack thereof) are unfounded. Reducing risks should be a priority for hotels, especially when it comes to the bathrooms and in particular the baths themselves.

Where to start? – Measure your risk
You need to understand the level of slip risk in a bathroom, especially in the bath, by hiring a company to undertake a slip test. The HSE have slip resistance standards that must be abided by, so there are no areas for doubt when it comes to accidents if you have not followed their advice. These tests can vary and importantly the  pendulum test is the only one recognised in UK courts, which is paramount if a case gets to court. Bear in mind, bathroom slips are harder to manage compared to kitchens because you cannot be in the guests room to advise on water control. Ensure the test is undertaken in wet and dry conditions because it can change the reading substantially.

Cleaning considerations
Deep cleaning of the floors using specific floor cleaning chemicals designed to reduce the slip risk will help. This should be repeated on a regular basis and documented for future reference if needed. Using our cleaning products on a regular basis, will continue to reduce the slip on the floor and continue to reduce issues associated with slip risks.

Why it matters now more than ever
In February 2016, changes in Health and Safety legislation could mean substantially higher fines and even custodial sentences for preventable accidents. Ensure you are up to date with cleaning, testing and guidance for guests to be safe in the knowledge you have done everything you can to prevent slips.
